Based on a US military overshirt originally worn by Hiram Berdan's Union 1st U.S. Sharpshooter regiment during the Civil War. Berdan believed that a uniform of green cloth would “better correspond in the leafy season with the colours of the foliage” and designed a uniform that was a forerunner of the camoflague concept. Part of this uniform was an specially designed overshirt with a shoulder patch, a large cartridge pocket and leather binding on pocket edges for longevity. The Sharpshooters were trained intensively in the art of marksmanship, skirmish drill and physical conditioning. Because of its functionality, the shirt went onto to become replicated for civilian workshirts by post war manufacturers and eventually became the basis for many hunting and shooting shirts. Available in Japanese green/navy plaid wool and red/green plaid wool with leather buttons and pocket binding.
